Memories Gallery

Reaching a milestone like 60 naturally stirs up
memories, nostalgia, sentimentality....

Scattered pictures of the smiles we left behind...

fill several boxes in my home,
each box a different chapter
... In My Life.
(Do you know these two songs?)

I sifted through these boxes recently.
I hope you enjoy this look back!

Chad and I - couple of Joe Cools in an
Austin summer and, below, in Berlin.

At 5 weeks with Mom and Dad;
1963

Can it be that it was all so simple then?
Or has time re-written every line?If we had the chance to do it all againTell me, would we?Could we?

At 10
with my new baby brother Kelly;
1973

I have a great amount of admiration
for my brother Kelly,
from the time I watched him
take his first steps
to the determined manner I've
watched him succeed in life.
Below: And he remains my go-to
in all things mechanical
(cuz I didn't get that gene!)

Summer vacation with my family, 1981.

MemoriesMay be beautiful and yetWhat's too painful to rememberWe simply choose to forget

So it's the laughterWe will rememberWhenever we rememberThe way we wereThe way we were

A dear friend and sparring partner
during my time in the ministry,
Frank McKay; 1991.

Heard of the Grande Dame?
Meet the Grand Dan of Granger!
Or, aka St. Dan to many of us.
My Uncle Dan spent 30 years as an
advertising artist with Neiman Marcus
before returning to Granger
in a full length mink driving
a banana yellow Olds convertible.
He played a special role in my life.

AISD colleague Susan and I;
2010 Hill Country Ride for AIDS

So many great times with this team
at AISD Central Office

The trip that launched
annual bus tours choreographed
by Mom each year
for the next 20 years to Nashville.

There are places I'll rememberAll my life though some have changedSome forever, not for betterSome have gone and some remain

Deb, Justin, Dwight & I, 2009.

All these places have their moments
With lovers and friends I still can recallSome are dead and some are livingIn my life I've loved them all

Jason and I at our 1985
Welcome Home party
following our summer in Greece.
Losing him shattered my faith.

Never a dull moment with Rob,
if only he'd seen the value
in steady employment.

Rob always knew
how to make me laugh

It was especially hard
not laughing
when in the studio together

In Memoriam, dear Rob

Ruidoso, NM

Always have a spare ready,
I always said
in my drinking days.
Cruising the Thames at the
Henley Regatta in 2000
we got to see Princess Anne
present the trophies to
teams Harvard and Yale.

Wish I still had the Miata,
love this car!

Nephew Trevor decided I needed
washing more than the car.

Both my grannies loved riding in it,
here with Grandma Machu.

My paternal Grandmother, Lib,
with second husband Alfred --
whose favorite expression
about everything was,
Shithouse!

Chad brings me much joy
when we hang out,
as he does here at
one of Dwight's fabulous
dinner parties.

A few of my wonderful cousins.
With me on the back row are my
two goddaughters,
Nancy and Kendra.
Tracy and Lisa in front.

Dwight standing in front of one of our
favorite Amsterdam establishments; 2001.

I have such fond memories of Jason,
my high school & college running mate,
seen here at our favorite secluded spot
on Mykonos, 1985.
Gone too soon, but never forgotten,
I've dedicated every Hill Country Ride
I've done in his memory.

I'm sure there's a beach at Cancun
somewhere,
but quite honestly,
this was my favorite spot; 1995.

It had been a long day
on Hollywood Boulevard,
with a lot of pitstops along the way.

Chad's idea, not mine.

I grew up playing the organ every Sunday
in my family's church
accompanied by this dear lady,
Helen Volney.
Even today when I sit at the piano
and crank out a few old favorite hymns
I think back fondly of her.

Though I know I'll never lose affectionFor people and things that went beforeI know I'll often stop and think about themIn my life

My precious great-grandparents,
Tom & Frances Kovar.
I loved that pair of pants ...
and insisted on wearing them
long after they were the
proper size.

I had a wonderful childhood -
made especially so by the friendship
of my Aunt Sandy who was
only 11 months older than me.

One of the grossest experiences
of my life (1996),
getting vomited on while
riding the Texas Cyclone.
Thanks so much Ray!

One of the funniest lines
ever spoken to me
in a whisper was said
by Pinocchio; 1983.

One of my house parties
in Western Oaks; 2007.

My Aunts and my Mom beside me

I'm sorry but,
did the pilot just say we're
unable to land because
there is a hijacked
TWA jet on the Athens runway?
Indeed so, 1985.
"Oh. My. God."

My lovely cousin Kendra at
cousin Derrick's Halloween Party.

I could not have come across two
more perfect tour guides as
Walter & Gunther.
Berlin, 1999

The Raindrop Turkish Foundation
provided us quite an
unforgettable adventure
in Turkey.

My SU sorority sisters
Carolyn and Cindy
making our late night trip back
to the mainland
after an exhausting day on Crete.

Grace Ann McKay was
the light and joy I needed
while serving the church in Crosby.

Ohmigawd!

So much fun we had
growing up together!

Picture the three of us
in my Miata on the return trip
from San Antonio's RiverCenter.
Of course the top was down,
and Dolly got lots of honks!

I am stunned by the size
of this Live Oak tree today
that Trevor and Brutus assisted
Dad and I in planting.
