PODCASTS
While driving,
I enjoy podcasts that examine History
or I tune in to Old Radio Mystery programs.
#1. LITERATURE AND HISTORY
I can not say enough great things about Doug Metzger and the wonderful educational journey he takes me on in each episode of Literature and History.
With an emphasis on the cultural history behind famous works of literature, Literature and History is one of the most popular independent podcasts on this subject. Starting with Sumerian cuneiform in 3,100 BCE, Literature and History moves forward in chronological order through Assyriology, Egyptology, the Old Testament, Ancient Greece and Rome, the birth of Christianity, Late Antiquity, and dawn of the Middle Ages.
After listening to the fascinating Episode 1 on "The Tower of Babel" I was hooked.
Doug Metzger finished his Ph.D. in literature in 2011. His chief scholarly interest, following his dissertation work, continues to be 19th-century realism and postbellum American philosophy. Be sure to visit the podcasts' website where Doug also posts podcast updates, funny music videos (associated with each of the episodes), and check out the superb Bonus Material!
Literature and History has been featured at Literary Hub, on BBC 3, Harvard’s Sound Education, and in the Paris Review. Learn more about the show in articles featured in Pacific Standard magazine and The American Scholar.
