Book Review, 1st Qtr 2025

Below is my current favorite author
& 3 books of his I highly recommend:

Abir Mukherjee
is the bestselling Scottish-Bengali author of the Wyndham & Banerjee series of crime novels set in Raj-era India.

His books have sold over 400,000 copies and won numerous awards, including: the CWA Dagger for best Historical Novel, the Prix du Polar European, the Wilbur Smith Award, and Amazon Publishing Readers Award for E-book of the Year!

I get so put out with the popular crime writers today who pander to the twitter generation (you know who I'm talking about).  They provide their readers with 1-2 sentence paragraphs and terse dialogue that caters to the fallen literacy rates in our society, a sad inability to read anything of weight and substance.  Apparently a third sentence in a paragraph is verboten in today's crime fiction.

(Which is why I threw in that third one there for good measure.  Who out there is still with me?  Congratulations!)

I got hooked on Mukherjee while reading the first book in the detective Wyndham series.  I was overjoyed to find a modern crime writer who could guide me into a historical setting and educate me about a particular period and locale, paint descriptive scenes in real man-sized paragraphs, and create a delightful (albeit imperfect) duo reminiscent of Holmes (addictions and all!) and Watson.

Wyndman and his sidekick Banerjee are a wonderful coupling.   Mukherjee masterfully brings these two characters to life - their pasts, their personal relationships, their unique gifts for detection, their inner struggles - so that, by the time the first novel ended, I found myself suffering a painful separation anxiety.  I was desperate to join my new friends again in distant Calcutta - a locale I now know so well thanks to the descriptive paragraphs skillfully penned by this literate author.

And so it was that I immediately downloaded Book 2 and then immediately downloaded Book 3. And guess what?  Each of them only got better and better.  Book 3 wound up being my favorite.  Please don't miss the addendums at the end of these books.  It was so fascinating to find that each book's plot is loosely based around factual events or personalities.

BOOK 1:
I loved it!
Giving it 4.5 Stars!

A Rising Man
~ Abir Mukherjee

India, 1919.

Desperate for a fresh start, Captain Sam Wyndham arrives to take up an important post in Calcutta’s police force.

He is soon called to the scene of a horrifying murder.  He and his trusted Sergeant Banerjee must solve the case quickly.

But there are some who will do anything to stop them…

This is gonna be good...
BOOK 2:

A Necessary Evil
~ Abir Mukherjee

India, 1920.

Captain Sam Wyndham and Sergeant Banerjee of Calcutta Police must investigate the dramatic assassination of a Maharaja’s son…

Prince Adhir was unpopular with religious groups, while his brother – now in line to the throne – appears to be a feckless playboy.

As Wyndham and Sergeant ‘Surrender-not’ Banerjee endeavour to unravel the mystery, they become entangled in a dangerous world.

They must find the murderer, before the murderer finds them.

BOOK 3:

When Captain Sam Wyndham is summoned to investigate a grisly murder, he is stunned at the sight of the body: he’s seen this before. The previous night, in a drug-addled haze, he stumbled across a corpse with the same ritualistic injuries. It seems there’s a deranged killer on the loose. Unfortunately for Sam, the corpse was in an opium den and revealing his presence there could cost him his career.

With the aid of his quick-witted Indian Sergeant Banerjee, Sam must try to solve the two murders, all the while keeping his personal demons secret, before somebody else turns up dead.

Set against the backdrop of the fervent fight for Indian independence, and rich with the atmosphere of 1920s Calcutta, Smoke and Ashes is a brilliant historical mystery in this award-winning series.
